Sinusitis Fact Sheet

Sinusitis can be quite uncomfortable and can cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, headache, and a discharge of mucus from the nose. If you are suffering from acute sinusitis, there are some self-care measures you can take to help relieve your symptoms.

Self-Care Strategies for Acute Sinusitis

Acute Sinusitis - Delayed Antibiotic Strategy

1. Nasal Irrigation

One effective self-care strategy for acute sinusitis is nasal irrigation. This involves flushing out the sinuses with a saline solution to help remove mucus and reduce inflammation. Nasal irrigation can be done using a neti pot or a nasal irrigation bottle.

2. Steam Inhalation

Another helpful self-care measure is steam inhalation. Breathing in moist air can help relieve nasal congestion and reduce inflammation. You can do steam inhalation by filling a bowl with hot water, placing a towel over your head, and inhaling the steam for 10-15 minutes.

3. Decongestants

Over-the-counter decongestant nasal sprays or oral decongestant medications can provide temporary relief from nasal congestion associated with sinusitis. However, it's important to use these medications for a short duration to avoid rebound congestion.

4. Pain Relievers

If you have facial pain or headache due to sinusitis, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. These medications can help alleviate the discomfort associated with acute sinusitis.

5. Rest and Hydration

Resting and staying hydrated can also support your body's healing process. Getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of fluids can help thin the mucus, making it easier to clear your sinuses.
